You’re probably familiar with many of the things that affect your home’s climate. A few of the biggest factors are HVAC maintenance, cleaning habits, and how often you replace your air filters. However, one factor that many homeowners aren’t aware of is the placement of the thermostat. Believe it or not, where you choose to place it can have a significant impact on your household comfort.
Why Does Thermostat Placement Matter?
Your thermostat works by monitoring the temperature around it to determine if it’s too hot or too cold for your preferences. Then, it relays that information to your HVAC system, and your heating or cooling unit responds accordingly. So, if your thermostat isn’t able to achieve an accurate reading of the temperature, then the information it feeds to your HVAC appliances will be incorrect. That will lead to inconsistent comfort as well as your heating and cooling units operating either too often or not often enough.
Where Should You Place Your Thermostat?
In general, all that matters is that your thermostat is placed somewhere that will accurately represent your home’s temperature. For one, you should always make sure that you set the thermostat up between 50 and 62 inches from the floor. Any higher, and its reading will be too warm. Any lower, and the readings will be too cold. You should also try to place the thermostat as close to the middle of your household as possible. Usually, the center of your home will be the closest to the house’s average temperature.
Where Shouldn’t You Place Your Thermostat?
You should never place your thermostat in any rooms that are much warmer or colder than the rest of your home. For example, rooms like the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room are almost always poor options. You also shouldn’t set up your thermostat near doors, windows, or air vents, and you should always try to keep it away from direct sunlight. In any of those places, the temperature readings will frequently be thrown off.
