Man repairing kitchen sink

It can be very difficult to clean your plumbing pipes as you don’t have direct access to them. However, there are things you can try before you call a plumber to fix your problem. These are low-cost ways of fixing plumbing issues yourself.

Handle Grease Buildup

Grease will build up in your kitchen sink’s plumbing pipes if you dump oil down them. You shouldn’t be doing this, but many people don’t know better. Luckily, you may be able to cut through and remove the grease with a little bit of effort.

Bring eight cups of water to a boil. Once it’s boiling, add three tablespoons of detergent. Pour it down the drain, waiting about five minutes if you have plastic pipes. You may need to perform this process several times to clear the pipe.

Use a Drain Cleaner

You may want to use a traditional drain cleaner, but you should avoid these as they have chemicals that harm the environment and animals. The only drain cleaner you should use is one that’s made of enzymes; these products are made of natural and safe ingredients.

Fix-A-Leak Plumbing & Heating of Hauppauge, NY, can help you with your tough draining issues. We’ve been helping families for over 20 years and have highly qualified plumbers.

Use a Plunger

Plungers are useful for more than just your toilet. Try using a plunger in a blocked sink, shower or bathtub. Make sure there’s enough water to create suction. Push up and down several times and then listen to see if the obstruction has been cleared.

Use a Snake

A snake can clear out hair and other obstructions within a pipe. You can buy disposable and long-lasting snakes at a hardware store. Just be careful because you can damage pipes with a snake.
